Hersey senior awarded the Richard W. Calisch Arts Unlimited Award


Each year, the Richard W. Calisch Arts Unlimited Award is presented to a District 214 high school senior who best exemplifies creative excellence in the arts. This award is the District's way of honoring Mr. Calisch's spirited commitment to and support of the fine and performing arts program when he was a teacher in our district.  

This year’s award recipient is senior Jamie Wiener. Jamie is a straight-A student who has a passion for creative writing and the arts. Jamie has performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the John Hersey band program, received super ratings at the Illinois High School Association’s solo and ensemble contest and is a three-year member of Orchesis. Her poetry has been published in Teen Ink, the District 214 Arts Unlimited Anthology and the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.

The honorable mentions from the District's five other schools include the following seniors:

Michael Sauer – Michael has served as a co-concertmaster of the Buffalo Grove chamber and symphony orchestras and transcribed an entire musical for the combined school orchestras, giving every member a chance to be involved.

Emily Franke – Emily has served as student director for Elk Grove’s One Acts production, was the lead actress for the Illinois High School Theater Festival performance of “She Kills Monsters”and has twice qualified for the state’s speech team prose competition.

Margaret Ward – Margaret is involved in Prospect’s show choirs, Madrigal Singers, Speech team, marching band and several school productions. She is a four-time state finalist in the Performance in the Round speech competitions.

Kailynn Muhr – Kailynn has been selected to numerous honors ensembles in band, orchestra and choir, including the ILMEA District VII Honors Jazz Band and Concert Band. She is a leader among at Rolling Meadows who constantly offers guidance to other musicians.

Gillian Garnowski – Gillian belongs to band, orchestra, choir, theatre and Interact with Africa, an after-school service club that raises money to build schools in Angola. She is a member of the school’s Jazz Band 1, one of the state’s top jazz bands.
