Football coaches in the Mid-Suburban League, including District 214, participated in a clinic with USA Football on June 13 to stay up to date on the safest tackling strategies and techniques for their players.

Twenty-five coaches attended the clinic, held at Prospect High School, and discussed tackling and blocking methods that allow players to avoid using their head, improving the health and safety of student-athletes.

“We have to be proactive in making football safer,” said Dave Klusacek, Master Trainer for USA Football, which is the national governing body for amateur American football. “Techniques that we use now compared to the techniques that we used before are safer.”

At the clinic, coaches learned teaching methods and watched videos featuring NFL coaches discussing how they can make the game safer. They also participated in demonstrations on the football field to practice safe shoulder tackling techniques.

"The clinic put on by USA football was very informative and gave our coaches some great information on continuing to provide the safest situation for our athletes,” said Prospect Head Football Coach Dan DeBoeuf. “We enjoyed our time learning in both the classroom on on field demonstrations of the drills. We feel that we can use this information immediately with our student athletes!"
