Lara Becker:
Lara Becker received her BA (Speech/Theater) from Lewis University and Master of Arts from Northeastern University (Speech and Performing Arts). Currently, she is enrolled in Olivet Nazerne’s Master of Arts in School Improvement and Leadership program. Mrs. Becker joined the Hersey staff in 1996. She is the founder and creator of our Children’s Theater program now in its 11th year. Lara directs and teaches Acting I, II, III, and IV, Freshmen English, and a senior elective course. Mrs. Becker sponsors the Improvisation Club, and is John Hersey High School’s Arts Unlimited Coordinator.
Christine Beverson:
Christine A. Beverson is a graduate of Northwestern University, where she earned three degrees: a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, a Bachelor of Arts in History, and a Master of Music in Music Education. She studied violin with Gerardo Ribeiro at Northwestern University, and Robert Hanford, concertmaster of the Lyric Opera. A native of New York, Ms. Beverson attended the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division for six years, and studied violin with Grigory Kalinovsky and Patinka Kopec.
Ms. Beverson has studied conducting with Dr. Mallory Thompson and Daniel Farris at Northwestern University. In 2008 she accepted the position of Director of Orchestras at John Hersey High School, where she currently directs four orchestras, and teaches Advanced Placement Music Theory, Harmony and Arranging, and World History. Prior to accepting the position at Hersey, Ms. Beverson worked in Development at Ballet Tech, the New York City Public School for Dance. In this position, she wrote grants and obtained funding for the school from major corporations and private foundations.
Ms. Beverson plays violin professionally in Chicago and the surrounding area, and is an active clinician. Ms. Beverson has performed violin throughout the world, including performances at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and has performed on tour throughout Italy as a violinist in the Oberlin Virtuosi. Ms. Beverson is a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the American String Teacher Association.
Veronica Bruce:
Veronica Bruce received her BFA in Art Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign in 2004. She is currently working on her M.F.A. in Painting through the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has taught the following courses: A.P. Art History, A.P. Studio Art, Art One, Art Survey, Intermediate Art, Advanced Art, Graphic Arts and Design and Photography. Veronica has taught in District 214 since 2004.
Scott Casagrande:
Scott J. Casagrande has been Director of Bands at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, IL since 1999. He was previously Director of Bands at Plainfield High School in Plainfield, IL from 1991 to 1999 and at Stephen Decatur High School in Decatur, IL from 1988 to 1991. A native of Fairfax County, VA, Mr. Casagrande received his B.S. and M.S. in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He has completed additional coursework at the University of Miami, North Central College and VanderCook College of Music. Ensembles under Mr. Casagrande’s direction have been selected to perform at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic (Symphonic Band – 2007 and Jazz Ensemble - 2004), 13 of the last 14 Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festivals and four National Concert Band Festivals. In addition, ensembles under his direction have won numerous state and regional jazz ensemble and marching band competitions, including the Purdue Jazz Festival (four times), Jazz in the Meadows (two times) and the Marching Illini Band Festival. In 2007, the John Hersey band program was awarded the prestigious Sudler Flag of Honor from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. In addition, the John Hersey High School Music Department has been designated as a "Signature School" by the Grammy Foundation.
In 2004, he was one of three conductors in the United States chosen to participate in the NBA International Conducting Symposium in Rome, Italy, conducting the Italian National Army Band. He has received thirteen Citation of Excellence Awards from the National Band Association, the School District 214 Special Recognition Award, John Hersey High School Outstanding Contributions to Education Award, the Plainfield HS Stephen Hunt Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award, the Illinois Mr. Holland’s Opus Award and the Stephen Decatur HS Teacher Excellence in Service Award. Active in the National Band Association, he has been elected a High School Representative on the Board of Directors twice and he has been a member of the Revelli Composition Contest Committee since 2003. In March, 2010, he will be inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, where he will guest conduct the United States Navy Band.
Mr. Casagrande and school booster parents started the Plainfield Invitational Concert Band Festival in 1996 and the Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival in 2001. Both of these festivals annually host the finest bands in the Chicago area and nationally recognized adjudicators and clinicians.
Mr. Casagrande is an active guest conductor and adjudicator. He is a member of the National Band Association, Illinois Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, Phi Beta Mu and the Italian American Band Directors Association of Illinois. He and has wife, Janice, have two daughters, Mary and Julia.
Rich Lane:
During Rich Lane’s high school years at Fremd, he was inspired by his art teacher to pursue a degree in Art Education. After receiving his Associates degree from Harper College and studying abroad in England, Rich completed his degree at Northern Illinois University. He also was the Student Gallery Director at NIU, where he organized art shows for the University. Rich started teaching photography at Hersey in 1994 and continues his education by taking graduate coursework through U of I and NIU. He has photographs in the permanent collections of Harper College, Steven Tyler and Madonna.
Kyle Marquette:
Kyle Marquette has taught English and directed theater at Hersey since 1990, and he took on the role of Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator in the Fall of 2009. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in English Education from Illinois State University and his M.A. in Directing from Roosevelt University. John Hersey’s theater program has had numerous productions chosen for the Illinois High School Theater Festival, and Kyle has served as the director of the All-State Production of Les Miserables in 2007.
Matt Michelin:
Matt Michelin is an English teacher at John Hersey High School. He graduated from Illinois State University in 2003 with a degree in theatre education, English and speech and communications. He spent his first year out of college as a teacher in a small Yupik Eskimo village in rural Alaska and has spent the last few summers working with teachers in northern Uganda. He has been teaching at Hersey since August 2005 and works with freshmen, juniors and seniors. He also currently serves as the technical director for the theatre program and will be directing Children’s theatre in the fall of 2009. He is a member of the Illinois Theatre Association and has served on the Illinois High School Theatre Festival Committee as an Associate Director for College Auditions.
Susan Renner:
Sue Renner is a graduate of Arlington High School. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois in 1984. Sue received a Master’s of Education from the University of Illinois in 2000. Ms. Renner began her teaching career in the Norridge and Glenview school districts and joined District 214 in 2000. Teaching experience also includes St. Theresa, St. Collette and St. Viator High school. Sue continues her education taking coursework through Northern Illinois University.
